Many times we hear the words “you are enough”, when needing encouragement through depression/anxiety.
I get it. The sentimant is supposed to turn us from our own shame and encourage our inner selves that we are doing a great job!
But are we?
Are we supposed to tell ourselves we have the answer to everything, and even on our worst days we are still good people.
This common misperception that circles Christian culture is that in order to get through our trials we must say to ourselves “You are enough!” But this is directly against the gospel.
Jesus came to save us from our sin. Which means we are in fact not enough, we are born into a sin nature (Eph. 2:3)
Another point would be, if you are enough-why do you need Jesus? You know you need Jesus. Everytime you have lost your temper, or done something you knew you shouldn’t have, or tried your hardest to do the right thing but once again you have come to the end of yourself and realize…I did it again. I try my hardest to be perfect, but it seems impossible.
That’s because it is.
But wait, there is good news. Although we were still in sin, Christ died for us, for you, and for me. (Romans 5:8)
This is the gospel! It’s beautiful, and lovely while simultaneously being wounding, yet healing.
Guard your heart sisters, you aren’t enough. But guess what, Jesus has you covered.
